    • Although German is usually cited as an outstanding example of a highly inflected language, the degree of inflection is considerably less than in Old German or in other old Indo-European languages such as Latin, Ancient Greek, or Sanskrit, or, for instance, in modern Icelandic or Russian. The three genders have collapsed in the plural, which now behaves, grammatically, somewhat as a fourth gender.

Pytanie #1:

Hi guys, When for example you read a novel from Dostoesvky which is named Possessed with Constant Garnett?

translation and it has many French idioms in it and when the translator hasn't translated them, how can you understand the novel? Since I downloaded an electronic version of the novel but it hasn't ant footnoot to undersatnd and explain French idioms. Is it supposed that you American understand other European languages other than English and is it the case for all of you? You understand French, German and Spanish and maybe Chinese? This last one I'm not serious I'm just kidding.
Thanks in advance.

Pytanie #2:

German or Swedish Translation?

I have a few friends who have these cute creative titles on their Facebooks as their alternative names. I'm having trouble thinking of a phrase that I could easily translate and there's not much I know in either language that is entertaining. I'll award best answer to anyone who can come up with a cute or funny phrase in German or Swedish so that I can put it up on my page.

(E.x. these are the ones that my friends have Chris Mörder von Dinosauriern (Killer of dinosaurs)
Lena *Swedish that for some reason won't let me copy and paste* (Fairy Queen)
Hannah Je suis un anana (I am a pineapple))

Pytanie #3:

What is considered to be the best opera school/college/university in the world?

Juilliard, Curtis, and Jacobs are some of the names I often discover every time I google "best opera colleges". But obviously, USA is not the only place in the world to study opera & classical music. I want to know what are music colleges considered to be the finest when it comes to opera/voice program IN THE WORLD, not just in USA alone. The problem is, every time I try to search it up, I usually come up with American college names only..

I often hear that most people consider European conservatories (music colleges/universities) generally better than their American counterparts, esp. for opera/voice program, is that true? Because I heard that opera was born in Europe, thus it is much more appreciated and developed there than in USA so it would've made sense that Europe generally offers better learning opera experience for any aspiring opera singers. But what about the education? Are the European conservatories considered better in terms of the college program itself, specifically for opera?

I heard that Italy and Germany have some great opera colleges considering that many operas are written in Italian and German languages. Well, what about in other countries i.e. UK, Sweden, Spain, France, Russia, or even in other continents such as Asia or Africa? How does the music education (opera specifically) in those countries compared to the US? What are good music schools outside the US to study opera?

Thanks in advance.

p.s : for those who are wondering, I’ve already posted this question in the music section but it came with disappointing results..
Btw I often hear/read about the Swedish/Italian school of singing which is basically a combination of the Italian school of singing with the vocally advantageous "mixed" vowels of the Swedish language. The websites that talk about this Swedish/Italian school of singing claim that many great opera singers of international caliber studied voice in Sweden, such as Kirsten Flagstad, Jussi Björling & Birgit Nilsson.

So I was wondering, perhaps Sweden also has some excellent music colleges too to study voice/opera?
Speaking of tuition fee, I heard that starting 2011, all universities & colleges in Europe will charge tuition fee to ALL non-EU students. Are there any countries left in Europe whose universities/colleges are still tuition fee-free regardless of the students' nationality/citizenship?

Pytanie #4:

German names ending with e - should you spell it the English way with an a?

In the German language an e on the end of a name is pronounced like an a on the end, such as Julianne is Julianna, Anne is Anna, Ilse is Ilsa, etc. My family is Austrian and I'd want to use at least one German name but should I use the German spelling for tradition or the English spelling for easier pronunciation?
Well of course it isn't entirely that simple but that's the main difference people would have problems with. I didn't want to write a lot because no one would read it.

Pytanie #5:

how much does "High German" differ from "Low German"?

and is this name referring to the difference in "pitch" of the language or is this more so due to the elevation of the origin of the style of german language? for example, Swiss German was "High German" and the lower lands near the ports of the north were where "Low German" was spoken?

please explain too about "Middle High German"?..how long and where this was spoken and how, again different from the "High German"? and is "High German" still spoken today in Switzerland"? or is Switzerland composed mostly of Italian and French speakers now? how long this has been the case too if you can explain

thanks for your answers!

Pytanie #6:

R&S section can you help me with the English language?

No on answered me in the Languages section. Here is what I want to know:

Should you compound adjectives + nouns in English sometimes, or never? When you have noun adjectives, like cattoys or cat toys, toiletpaper or toilet paper, babynames or baby names? I noticed some people do that sometimes and some people do not. Which is correct? Is it similar to the rules in German or different? Thanks to you in advance for your answers.

Pytanie #7:

What happened to the ancestral language of the Germanic peoples? What happened to the language they had before?

What happened to the ancestral language of the Germanic peoples? What happened to the language they had before they switched it to the ARmenian ARyan (Indo-European) dialect from which ancient Germanic languages evolved?

Language is acquired, the earliest and most important teachers being the persons among whom the individual grows up when a child, not necessarily the parents in every case.

Owing to migrations, to altered environment, to contacts with strange peoples, the ancestral language may be forgotten, and a foreign language acquired, while the native pigmentation of hair,
eyes, skin, the form of the nose, etc., are not lost. Any races may, without in any way changing their racial character, change their language and, vice versa, the most different races may appear in
succession in a certain region, each supplanting the other, and each receiving its language from its predecessors.

The Irish have abandoned their Celtic language in the course of the last few centuries, without noticeably changing their "race". If language were a race trait, the Negroes of the United States would have to be counted as Anglo-Saxons, and many Negroes and Indians of
Central and South America as Latins.

Language and technology are transmitted by contact between cultures and viceversa, the apostles (Jews) taught Christianity to the pagans as the Armenians taught their language (Indo-European) to the people living in North, Central and Western Europe, just the Basques still speaking a non-Indo-European language but now they all speak an Indo-European language (Spanish).

So, the people living in those regions are neither natives speakers of Indo-European nor native believers of Christianity. They learned both, the language and the technology from the Armenians, the religion from the Jews.
Same case with Arabs spreading their religion and language throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Iberia and even Indonesia.

This is the proof that ALL Indo-European languages come from ARmenian and that ARmenian are the real and original ARyans (Indo-Europeans).

The so-called 'Jewish nose', prominent among modern Jews, Syrians, and Arabs is evidence of transfusion of Armenid (Hurrian) genes into the Semitic races. In Europe the Armenid type was omnipotent among the Celtic colonists of Britain and Ireland, and the Etruscans of Italy. The Anglo Saxons, the Swiss, the Scandinavians, the French

The painted priestly heads and surviving mummies of the pharaohs and their queens indicate that for generations Egyptian royalty belonged to the hawk nosed Armenids

A strong, hooked nose was a sign of leadership among the Romans whose many prominent men possessed such members. Then there are the beak nosed fairy tale witches, possessors of supernatural and magical powers, who can fly, brew medicine, and have power over life and death. This veneration of the high bridged nose has come down to our present days and has materialized in the symbol of the United States the Uncle Sam -- who is adorned with a prominent Armenid nose.

In ARmenia, there is an older Stonehenge, called Karahunj, Karahunj is 3, 500 years older than England’s Stonehenge and 3, 000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids Stone” in Armenian is “kar” and “henge” (a word which is absent in English) is the same “hunj” (voice, sound, echo in Armenian).

The name of ARmenia is connected with the Indo-European root AR- meaning light, sun, fire found in ARARat (Mount), ARyan, ARta etc and related to IRan.

In ARmenia is the final resting place of Noah's Ark (Mount ARARat), to this very day, Mount ARArat is sacred to the Armenians.

BTW, this awesome video is wrong because Germans, Scandibnavians are NOT Aryans (Indo-Europeans)
Yes, there are no records of what language they spoke before adopted the Indo-European language they speak now.
They are speaking a language that doesn't belong to them, they took Christianity from the Jews and the language and knowledge from the ARmenians.

This reminds me of The Planet of the Apes, where the apes stole human civilization and gave it to themselves.

Those bastards wanted to rob everything from my ancestrial history & culture and give it to themselves..their Racial and Culture theives..

Pytanie #11:

I need people who love girl names!?

I know most women tend to have an eight page long list of girl names that they love. I don't. For some reason I can easily throw out some boy names that I like, but when it comes to girl names I am completely stumped. I've always had hard times with girl names.
I am not pregnant right now, though hubby and I are thinking of adding another addition. We have two daughters already, Brittney and Holly. The Y ending for both was unintentional and I don't mind straying from another Y ending as long as it sounds nice.
The only restrictions I have is that the name is somewhat English sounding, but sounds good in the German language (I live in a German speaking country).
My husband likes Lucy. For me, it is okay but doesn't haven't that wow factor.
I love Charlotte and it has the wow factor for me. I can't use it though. In German, it would be pronounced Shar-lot-tay and I hate that.
Also, M names are out since our last name starts with M and I don't think it would flow well.
I can't get over my disappointment with the Charlotte dilemma and I can't come up with any other name that I like as much. So this is where you come in. Anyone have suggestions for girl names that sound good with Brittney and Holly?
It would really help me out! Thanks!

Pytanie #12:

How can it be ok for white people to get away with this type of ignorance?

I recently returned from a choir tour and noted these two incidents that I thought were quite racist.

1. They were singing mostly European/American songs. However, a few songs on the program were Japanese and Kenyan. Just before the choir started to sing those songs, the director turned to the audience and said, "Now we are moving on to the world portion of our program." I mean, hello? So Europe and North America are not part of the "world"? If it's European/North American, it's "normal", and if it's anything else, it's "world"?

2. Then, the director went on to announce to the audience that the choir would be singing one song from Japan, sung in Japanese. And then they would sing a second song from Kenya, sung in... and she couldn't remember what language the song was in. So -- get this -- she LOOKS OVER at this one girl in the choir who happens to have an African last name, as though that girl might know. That girl has never even been to Africa, and her family isn't even from Kenya! So she had no idea! So the director smiled sheepishly and said, "well, whatever they speak in Kenya!"

This director has a PhD in Conducting and has been conducting for more than 10+ years. This is a UNIVERSITY CHOIR! Whenever we sing songs in German or French, etc, she goes out of her way to explain the language and the meaning. When we sang that one song in Swahili (the song from Kenya), we didn't even go over the meaning and she didn't even BOTHER to learn what language the song was in.

How ignorant and racist can you get?! And I'm white!

Pytanie #13:

Protestants: Did the stubbornness of Luther increase and lengthen the schism?

When Luther wrote the German language version of the Bible and added the word "alone" pertaining to salvation of faith, did he refuse to correct it merely because it would please the Pope? When confronted with the error he made some very crude remarks against the Pope and seemed to indicate that if it upset the Catholics (Papist's) it was OK. I don't think he had any idea a dutchman by the name of John Calvin would seize this mistake as the basis of his new religion, which is still practiced today by the "faith alone" sects of Protestantism. What do you say as to his motive???

"The most important example of dogmatic influence in Luther's version is the famous interpolation of the word alone in Rom. 3:28 (allein durch den Glauben), by which he intended to emphasize his solifidian doctrine of justification, on the plea that the German idiom required the insertion for the sake of clearness. (39) But he thereby brought Paul into direct verbal conflict with James, who says (James 2:24), "by works a man is justified, and not only by faith" ("nicht durch den Glauben allein"). It is well known that Luther deemed it impossible to harmonize the two apostles in this article, and characterized the Epistle of James as an "epistle of straw," because it had no evangelical character ("keine evangelische Art")."
I have studied Christian religions for years, and this information can be found in a number of studies. Here is the one I took the excerpt from.

Pytanie #14:

Native German speakers please help me translate. (Long)?

Hi, I'm currently a college student studying Sociology/psych with German language as a minor. I know elementary German but it is not enough to hold a conversation beyond, "guten morgen! wie gehts? gut. Wissen Sie hier Bescheid? nein? ok danke shoen." or something similar. One of my best friends is German and has since gone back to Germany and I would very much like to send her a youtube video or me speaking well written and spoken German to surprise her...I also want to use it for this local campus video production. I can pronounce words relatively well, i need YOUR help in accurately translating my messege for me. Its not really even a messege its more like an introduction of who i am in German but im just trying to get the point across that I can pronounce and say words haha. My mother taught me German as a child but it has been slipping away over the years. Thank you in advance for taking time to help a guy out. its very long so maybe you guys can each do just one paragraph if u dont have the time or patience to do the whole thing.

Hi everyone. My name is Mike and I am an American. I am originally from Hawaii but I currently in Eugene, Oregon attending the University of Oregon studying Sociology and psychology. I am 20 years old and am of 3/4 Japanese-American and 1/4 German-Jewish heritage. I also speak two languages fluenty, English and Japanese and am learning German and Russian. My father is Japanese-american and his family left Japan to come to America in 1880 and we have been here ever since. My mother is Half German/Jewish and half Japanese and she is from Tokyo.

It is very strange I know. My grandmother and her family (on my mothers side) were German Jews living in Straussburg at the start of World War II, they were originally from Bavaria. In 1939 they fled Germany after their German friends warned them of what would happen to them if the Wermacht or the SS caught them. They fled to Lithuania and acquired Visa's from the Japanese ambassador, who was not allowed to do it but he did anyway) which allowed them to travel across the Trans-Siberian railroad across Russia to Japan. you would think the Japanese would not be sympathetic to Jews but they were happy to take the refugees in because many were skilled professionals like doctors, pharmacists, surgeons and intellectuals and could benefit the Japanese economy.

Enough about my history. My hobbies include American football, rugby, music, surfing, playing the ukulele and now since im in college....partying! my favorite american football teams are the San Fransisco 49'ers and Oregon Ducks, i like hip hop, classic rock, indie and reggae music, i love to surf in Hawaii and in california and play my ukulele everyday.

I was inspired to start learning German and embracing my German heritage only recently after i met some German foriegn exchange students here in Oregon. among them i met my on and off beautiful girlfriend, thats you zoe hi! , and one of my good friends Alfred, hi al! they made it feel OK to express my german heritage in this very American world I live in. Now I am studying so that I may visit my friends in Germany next year. Thank you very much for listening, if you have some tips fr me to improve my pronunciation or anything at all please tell me....

Pytanie #15:

What is the French look? What is the Dutch look?

You know how sometimes you can tell when someone is from a certain country and how someone might say that someone LOOKS Irish, Italian, German, Russian etc?

Well how would you LOOK French or Dutch?
My last name is French but I'm originally from Holland and I genuinely love the French culture and language etc. When I was younger I had very light blonde hair which later turned darker. I have dark eyes. I'm 5"4 (165cm).. I've heard the Dutch are tall but I'm only 14.

I would like to know if the Dutch and French have a look..

For example, the Irish may usually be thought of as redheads, the Italians usually have dark hair, dark eyes and a tan complexion and then some countries in Europe usually consist of people with blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin (Like, in Switzerland or Sweden or something?)

But do the French and the Dutch have 'a look'? Dark hair or light hair? Curly hair or straight hair? Fair skin or tanned? Tall or short? Usually thin or not? Bushy or dark eyebrows? Curvy? Big breasts or butt? .. or maybe particular hairstyles and fashion such as French braids or certain clothing materials and garments... a 'signature' look or maybe a stereotype from centuries ago. That kind of stuff.

I know this question might be a bit difficult. So basically, is there a 'French look' or a 'Dutch look'?

- Thanks ! xo

Tokio Hotel Family: How's everything going?

I haven't asked a question in a really long time & i feel bad :(

The family has basically died...well in my opinion & we should liven it up again :D
Cause....yeah, we're a happy bunch of coconuts xD (lol...i like my version)

So how has everyone been? I miss talking to you guys, i really do. It sucks because it seems like 3/4 of the family members have either disappeared or lost interest in TH like i have & i hate that.

We should do something like...have a week where we celebrate one of our other interests...kinda like when Pia thought of the amazingly awesome idea of having a Gustav & Georg week.

I've noticed a lot of us like the same type of music so for example we could have a ....german music week or 2 where we recommend other German music to each other & have our avatar as our favourite German person. I think that'd be nice...we'd all probably grow closer to each other as well, talking about other things.

....That's just a lame idea of something we could do to make the family more interactive xD
You guys can name we could do too :D
I just feel like we're starting to head down the path of every other family on Y!A
& i really don't want that.

....P.S New members probably won't know who i am so sorry if all of the stuff i've said is confusing...i used to ask a lot of questions like this :D

Survey:
What's the main genre of music you listen to?
What foreign language sounds really nice to you? (other than German)
Have you ever been on a plane?
Favourite TH song? :)

Pytanie #18:

how do i correct problems on the "Human to Dog No Nos" list?

im planning on getting a puppy, if i come accross any of the stuff what do i do? I know how to fix some of the things, but will post them anyway incase i can get better info. this is the site: Click Here and this is the list:

1. Dog runs in road. Owner comes out of house, stops at doorstep and starts screaming at the dog, very emotional. Dog ignores human. Dogs do not listen to unstable beings. When one dog wishes to tell something to another dog they do not start screaming and yelling.

2. Dog barks at human to beg for the food the human is eating, human absentmindedly hands the dog a piece. This is not respectful in the canine world. A lower member of the pack would never dream of barking at a pack leader while they were eating.

3. Dog sees another dog and starts to bark. Human tells dog, "No" and proceeds to pet their dog on the head giving affection. Which is really like saying "Good dog for barking.". Some mixed signals going on there.

4. Dog is on a leash and pulls the leash tight to sniff where they please as the owner talks to another human. This is bad leash manners. Asking the dog to wait patiently would provide the dog with a mental challenge, which all dogs need.

5. Owner corrects the dog by yelling the dogs name over and over again, but never actually addresses the dog with any type of body language. The dog does not know what it is the owner wants. There is no follow through. Human proceeds to have a conversation in human words with the dog stating they are going to put the dog in the truck. This human needs to speak "Dog", not "Human". On top of that, one should only use a dogs name for positive things so the dog associates his name with something good.

6. Owner allows their small dog to greet a human by putting their paws on a person's leg. In the dog world is is not a respectful way to greet another being. There is no difference between that 5 pound Yorkie and that 90 pound German Shepherd in regards to the meaning behind the behavior. See Small Dog Syndrome.

7. Owner corrects a dog long after the deed was done and the dog has moved onto other thoughts. Whatever the dog is doing at the moment you correct them is what the dog will think you are upset about.

8. Dogs only being corrected 'some' of the time. Bark bark... Allowed... Bark bark. Dogs name yelled. Bark bark. But no real correction, no body language used. No follow through, no real communication, no consistency. When you are not consistent your dog will not listen to you as they will know that 'sometimes' they are allowed. Also, the dogs name should not be used in the correction.

9. Dogs walking slightly in front of the person holding the leash. Then the human expects the dog to ignore other dogs when they LET the dog lead. Mixed signals, you are my leader, but listen to what I say. Do you know how confusing that is for a dog?

10. Humans approaching a gate, or doorway, and let the dog nose their way first. The leash being loose does not make it ok. Dogs should be sent back a step and be watching for the humans cue that it's their turn. Not pushing.

11. Humans attempting to go first through an entrance way, telling the dog to wait but never following through. Dog paused, but still had their snoot in the door way and was tense in posture, showing they did not give in to the idea. Dog should have stepped back and relaxed before the human allowed the dog to pass.

12. Owner picks up small dog. Dog wiggles, and or whines to get down and the owner obeys, reinforcing the dogs power over the human.

13. Dog barks at another dog. Human corrects dog by telling them "No". Dog turns their head to avoid eye contact with the human. Human turns the dogs head back to get the dog to look at them, thinking the dog should look at them when being reprimanded. When actually the dog turning away was the dog communicating to the human that they do not wish to challenge them. In the human world making eye contact when being spoken too is respect, however in the dog world staring straight into ones eyes can be taken as a gesture of a challenge.

14. Tiny dog is being carried by owner and barks and growls at another person. Owner laughs, grabs dogs snoot. Says "stop" in a neutral tone. The laugh by the owner and their tone were praise in the dog's eyes. Dog barks and growls even more. Owner repeats the "correction" laughs and states to stranger that the dog has 'little dog syndrome'. Later dog is seen pulling on the leash. All humans including the stranger laugh thinking the agression coming from such a small dog is funny. Owner states to stranger that the dog is "All talk and would never bite." That is a biter in the works.

15. Owner is sitting with tiny dog on lap. Tiny dog barks at so
15. Owner is sitting with tiny dog on lap. Tiny dog barks at someone passing by. Owner pulls the dog close to her body trying to get it to be quiet. Owner just gave the dog affection for barking.

16. Another dog walks by a small dog who is on their owners lap. Owner covers the small dog's eyes to try and stop the small dog from barking. The small dogs excitement escalates as dogs do not need their eyes to know another dog is near. They can feel it, smell it and hear it.

17. Small dog is on owner's lap and barks as some kids run by. Human hugs dog to their body while smacking it's snoot. Affection and smacks?

18. Little dog is in a heightened, excited, dominant state as it barks at people and other dogs passing by while sitting on owners lap. Owner gives dog hugs, kisses and scratches behind the ear as they tell little lap dog in human words to "be good, do you hear me?". Human words, 'be good' mean nothing to the dog. 19. Owner holds barking dog back by the chest, creating even more tension.

20. Dog barks. Owner grabs dogs snoot to hold it's mouth shut. This only creates more tension.

Pytanie #20:

Name Help? What do you guys think about my characters?

I'm in the process of getting ready to write a story, but having trouble picking names out. Picking out names has always been difficult for me, and I don't think I can continue writing up a plot without getting some names for faces, so I'm asking you. I need to guy names, a girl name, and your opinion of a girl name I'm considering. Here's some descriptions:

Male #1: The main guy character is very quiet. He has issues with communicating his feelings, but further on the story he takes up a responsibility to protect his friends where as he usually would ignore such a duty. There's a lot going on with this character beginning to end but his inability to say his true feelings is still undergoing construction, it causes lots of frustrations between the two females in the story (yes, there is a 'love triangle'). I want his name to mean Warrior or Protector, something along those lines but also not to old sounding or strange. His name is supposed to be foreshadow in the beginning of the story, symbolizing how far he will come towards the end of it.

Male #2: The second male character is very fun loving. He's very outgoing, basically a foil (opposite)of Male #1. He deserves a honorable name (but, again, not to old sounding).

Female #2: The second female character is very girly in a sensible way. This character is the childhood best friend of the lead female. She's bright and, for lack of a better word, good. Although she's torn between Male #1 and the second male, she is actually a likable character.

I'm considering naming my lead female Mina. In Dutch Mina means "Protector", German it means "Love" and in English it means "Strong-willed". These three meanings all contribute to the character's personality. She supports and cares deeply for her friends, particularly for Male #1. She sometimes expresses her feelings through actions and body language, rarely making them vocal. Mina has deep respect for all living and non-living things. Despite the triangle, she doesn't hold any grudges against Female #2 and when she realizes that the 'love triangle' slightly focuses on her, she decides not to be involved. She's a sweetheart, but can kick some serious ass when need be.

So...suggestions? What's your opinion of the name Mina?

What is a cool name for a German Shepherd?

I'm about to get a new puppy. She is a German Shepherd and I am picking her up on Friday. The only problem is finding a name. While I like names like Dally, Peyton, and Axel, my sister prefers Rosie, Flower, and Lily. My parents like names like Jessie. We want a short name that is unique, but at the same time not too Foreign and hard to pronounce. Something in a different language would be fine as long as it sounds nice. Thanks so much for any suggestions, and if you want any additional info, tell me and I will add it in.

How can I register for a German-language email account on yahoo.de when I'm in Australia?

I'm in Australia and I have tried repeatedly to register for a German-language email account on yahoo.de and the registration page keeps defaulting to the Yahoo!7 Registration page in Australia. How can I get a German-language account with a yahoo.de domain name when it keeps going to the Yahoo!7 registration page in Australia? This is really very annoying: I DON'T WANT AN ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EMAIL ACCOUNT ON YAHOO!7 IN AUSTRALIA. I DO WANT A GERMAN-LANGUAGE ACCOUNT WITH YAHOO.DE IN GERMANY. The yahoo help section seems not to cover this situation. Any sensible suggestions would be appreciated. Paul
Cookies are enabled/accepted for de.yahoo.com and if I sign into Yahoo! Deutschland using an existing Yahoo account and try to create a new account,a registration screen does not come up but I am merely brought to the email screen for the Yahoo account with which I had signed in. For example, if I sign into Yahoo! Deutschland using this account, i.e. rdv048@yahoo.com, and I click on the German Registration button to create a new ID, I am merely brought to the email screen for rdv048@yahoo.com and I cannot create another Yahoo ID/account while signed in under rdv048@yahoo.com. An answer that I got under another username, taken from the Yahoo "Help" pages suggested that I "sign in" into Yahoo! Deutschland presumably under an existing Yahoo ID and I should be able to register/create a new Yahoo ID and email account once I was in. This has proved to be wrong and I cannot create another Yahoo ID and email account while signed in under an existing Yahoo account.

Should muslims petition for the death of Facebook's founder?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is being investigated by Pakistani police under a section of the penal code that makes blasphemy against Muhammad punishable by death.

BBC Urdu reports — according to a Google Translation — that Pakistan's Deputy Attorney General has launched a criminal investigation against Zuckerberg and others in response to Facebook hosting a "Draw Muhammad" contest on its site late last month. On May 19, Pakistani authorities blocked access to Facebook over the contest, and this ban was lifted on May 31 after Facebook removed the page in Pakistan and other countries.

Asked to comment, a Facebook spokeswoman told us the company does not comment on legal matters.

Last month, according to English-language Pakistani newspaper The News International, a Pakistani High Court judge summoned the police after lawyer Muhammad Azhar Siddique filed an application for a First Information Report (FIR), claiming that the owners of Facebook had committed a heinous and serious crime under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. In essence, an FIR launches a criminal investigation. But no charges have been filed.

According to the paper, Section 295-C of the penal code reads: "Use of derogatory remark etc, in respect of the Holy Prophet, whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation, or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable for fine."

So, peace be unto Muhammad. But not unto Mark Zuckerberg.

According to two reports — one at Boxcrack.net, a kind of citizen journalism site run by Privacy International, and another at Pro Pakistani, a Pakistani Telecom and IT news site that lifted the news from BBC Urdu — the Deputy Attorney General has indeed lodged an FIR against Zuckerberg, fellow co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, and "Andy", the German woman who initiated the Draw Muhammad contest under a pseudonym.

According to Pro Paskistani, petitioner Muhammad Azhar Sidiqque said he's waiting for the police to contact Interpol about making arrangements for the arrest of Facebook's owners and "Andy". The site also says that the Deputy Attorney General told the High Court that Pakistan’s United Nations representative has asked to escalate the issue in the UN General Assembly. ®

What do you think about this fans open letter to the media concerning their treatment of Whitney Houston?

"Open letter to the media in Germany and Europe concerning the coverage of Whitney Houston’s "Nothing But Love" tour

Dear Media
The coverage of the German and European media about the current "Nothing But Love" tour of the artist Whitney Houston has largely been unbearable and that is still putting it mildly. The journalistic standards were so low that the critical readers should ask themselves whether the reliability of the source "newspaper" in regards to politically more pressing issues than a concert tour should be taken for granted. My criticism is not so much about the sole expression of an opinion by some authors, which are already missing any sense of respect and decency, but about the deliberate twisting of the truth as things were simply invented.
Often times lies have been created where it was obviously not enough for the editors to misinterpret the facts and to twist the story. A German newspaper wrote that Whitney Houston held an extensive lecture about drugs, her beating husband and her hard life for several minutes during one of her recent concerts. Since I attended the concert in question, I happen to know however, that the first two points were never even mentioned in the concert and that the third point was at best alluded to very briefly. That makes you wonder if that editor just wasn’t very capable of the English language and therefore would have been better of by refraining from any comment as to what has been said or whether - what I think is much more likely – he just used his imagination to polish up reality and his otherwise boring story.
Both would be absolutely an evidence of utter incapacity The unbelievably low level of journalism also shows again and again, when reference is made
to support acts at concerts and family members of Ms Houston. Her mother is being referred to as "Cindy" instead Cissy or the name of the support act singer Azaryah Davidson quickly changes to “Aszhasf Johnson”. Both incidents just demonstrate clearly how little attention has been paid while drawing up these reports.
The next issue at hand is the content of the reports to the degree they actually deal with the concerts and their quality instead of again and again warming-up old stories - probably for lack of sufficiently scandalous more recent news. Specifically, I refer to those concerts that took place in Germany and Switzerland, some of which I was able to attend myself and therefore take the liberty to have an opinion. In these reports regarding the concerts themselves, the stylistic device of hyperbole was used very extensively to the point of twisting and neglecting the "truth", even if I concede that in the field of art/music/entertainment often
there is no absolute truth. The fact that a few people left a concert prematurely is inflated to a scandal, while 90% of the audience were clapping, cheering and clearly having a good time.
That is a very questionable road to take as a journalist. Isolated people who behave disrespectfully towards the artist (booing) are made into representatives of the majority opinion. That is very poor journalistic style.
But the full extent of the bias of the self-appointed critics and journalists really struck me, when Ms. Houston performed some very good concerts in quick succession - of which the best vocally was probably Nuremberg even when measured against old standards. She received prolonged standing ovations, as well as cheers and applause for several minutes with a request for an encore after the concert. But a fool who thought that now a more positive article was due. Instead, the assembled audience was called for collective delusion. It was
charged with wearing "pink sunglasses and ear plugs".
To this I have to answer this: The audience in Nuremberg spanned ages from teenagers to greying seniors. Who can seriously claim that especially the older attendees wouldn’t form a more critical opinion? This wasn’t a teen-idol concert where the arena is filled with girls who have a crush. Certainly, there are also the "die-hard" fans - those that populate the first five rows, and really applaud and cheer at a not-so-good evening, if only out of respect for a life's work; those fans who not only attended one but often several concerts of this tour in Germany. But in Nuremberg an entire audience stood and cheered, paying standing ovation
to the artist for several minutes – and they did because it was more than deserved on this evening. The concert in Nuremberg was perhaps the best of this tour in Germany with Whitney Houston in perfect shape delivering a performance that was hardly any different from the supposedly fantastic years
It is also not really clear to me what is to be criticized about the adjustment of the key of certain songs to accommodate an altered voice (after all, the lady is now 46 years old) - this doesn’t diminish the achievement and the quality of a perfor
aperformance in any way. I'd rather listen a thousand times to the terrific live performances of an artist like Whitney Houston than to let myself be entertained by her age and genre-peers using full playback.
But perhaps the editors, critics and journalists are just struggling with the fact that they have become witness to a special quality in the relationship between Whitney Houston and her fans today. These fans have suffered with her in the years when everything was not well at all. They had to learn - sometimes painfully- that stars are only human after all and that perfection is just an illusion. But they have finally learned and the relationship between Whitney Houston and her fans today differs very much from the relationship of other stars to their fans. Whitney Houston's fans know that perfection cannot be delivered every day. They
have understood that an artist - just as a sportsman (which we somehow have much less of a problem conceding this to) - also has something lik
something like a daily form just as a sportsman (which we somehow have much less of a problem conceding this to) - also has something like a daily form. They no longer demand perfection from their star, but accept the fantastic performances as well as the weaker days.
On the other hand the "new" Whitney Houston seems to know and appreciate this fact very much. She is more open and free-spirited than before and she acknowledges her weaknesses with admirable self-insight like never before in her career. It is mutual respect that characterizes this relationship today and maybe it's just the cynicism of many people that is trying to read blind affection into this.
Hardly anyone knows better about the weaknesses and strengths of the artist Whitney Houston than her fans for decades. We can hear and see during the first song what kind of night it will be - but that's life - and we live and love life.
As a final note I want to remark on the constantly repeated statements concerning Whitney

How should I pronounce the names? PLEASE HELP?

Hi all

I have been living in the UK for a couple of weeks, my dad is English my mum is German and I grew up in Amsterdam (Holland). My first languages are Dutch an German, Englisch is a second language for me. I've got an oral exam about Dutch composers in a few weeks. Its going to be in English and of course English people can't really pronounce Dutch, which I can understand, because thats really tough. It is normal for me to pronounce the Dutch composer's names in the Dutch way and not the English way. However, when I talked to my future examiner (British guy) about the topic I accidentally pronounced the composers names in the Dutch way and I could see in his face that he found that really awkward and he hasnt got the faintest idea that this is the way it is acutally pronounced. I could see in his face that he thought "Oh my god, he cannot even pronounce their names right" What should I do? Should I pronounce the names in the english "wrong" way during the exam or should I just stick to my Dutch? I mean he could cleary hear that I've got a Dutch/German accent but he still didnt get it. he thought i was stupid because i pronounced the names in such an un-english manner. THANK YOU
But then he'll think I'm weird or he wont even understand me. Today he was like "HUH?" (he didnt say anything but I saw the "HUH?" expression on his face and he only understood after like a minute who I was talking about

Copyright laws regarding sports team's colors and name on T-shirts.?

Let's say I want to make and sell T-shirts of a sports team (like the Chicago Bulls for instance). However, the words "Chicago Bulls" will be written in a different language, like Hebrew or Arabic or Russian or German, and they will be colored using the official Bulls' colors of red and black. Is this violating copyright laws? I read on on copyright.org that names, titles, and colors can't be copyrighted, but I need clarification.
The T-shirts are pretty different. I don't know if I can calculate the percentage of difference, but many people don't even recognize what the shirts represent unless you explain it to them.

Is this Spanish translation correct?

Real Madrid C.F. – A brief History
Steven Spain, Sports 2009-12-26
Founded in 1902, Real Madrid Club de Fútbol has been one of the superpowers in European football since the middle of the last century. Indeed, they were awarded the honor of “Best club of the 20 th century by FIFA, an award for their huge domestic success and also for their domination of Europe. Real Madrid was not always named thus and the “Real” (or “Royal”) part of the name was only added after the club received a blessing from King Alfonso XIII in 1920. The club plays in a white strip and they are commonly known as “Los Merengues” (the whites). The club’s home is at the Santiago Bernebéu stadium in Madrid, it is one of Europe’s finest and holds over 80,000 fans and is now also a huge tourist attraction in the city (it hosted the final game of the Champions League Cup this year). Since the start of the Spanish national league in 1928, Madrid has never been relegated from the top division.
The start of the clubs success really came under the Franco regime – he saw the club as an excellent propaganda vehicle and poured resource into the club to try to make them a dominating force in Spain and beyond. It is from this point that one of the greatest rivalries in football was born with Catalan club Barcelona. The suppression of the Catalan language and culture by Franco’s regime immediately put Barcelona in opposition to Madrid, the team who seemed to represent the dictator’s regime and some unsavory match fixing incidents further soured relationships and made the rivalry all the more fierce.
Probably Madrid’s finest period came between 1955 and 1960 when they won an unprecedented five European Cup’s in a row. This really put the club on the map as a dominant force in Europe and no club has matched the feat since. Probably the finest display came in the 1960 final where they demolished their German opposition, Eintracht Frankfurt, 7-3. Real have since gone on to win the trophy four more times and this total of 9 is better than any other team. Amongst Real Madrid’s domestic honours are a massive 29 league titles and 17 Spanish cup triumphs, equally unrivalled by any team in Spain.
In recent years Madrid have been extremely successful also, famed for the having the resource to buy the most high profile signings, it has seemed like no price tag is too big for Real Madrid. In 2000 they brought in Luis Figo from rivals Barcelona for €60million, the following year saw French wonder Zinedine Zidane arrive from Juventus for a world record fee of €71million. Further high profile signings were made in 2002 and 2003 when Ronaldo and England captain David Beckham were brought in by the club to further strengthen the squad of stars. This policy of buying the best players has earned Real Madrid the new nickname of “Los Galacticos”.
The current team again is a collection of the world’s most prized footabll players with the likes of Kaká, Christian Ronaldo and Benzema who were all bought for astronomical sums in the summer of 2009 when Florentino Peréz (one of Spain’s wealthiest inhabitants) returned to restore Real Madrid to what he considers its rightful place.

German and Dutch native speakers..?

Would you know if the last name Sudermann is German or Dutch? If you look it up on Google (as I have) you will find mainly just information about various Mennonites. And since many Mennonites immigrated to Germany from Holland and Friesland hundreds of years ago, it is possible it is Dutch, which could be from Zuiderzee, a sea in the Netherlands. so originally the name could have been Zuidermann, then over time in Germany became, Zudermann, and then Sudermann, etc. Or perhaps this is just a coincidence and it simply is German for "man from the south" or "southern man"

So, German speakers: With your knowledge of German word making and making compound words, does Sudermann mean "man of the south" or is it not quite how one would say that these days. For example on google translate, in dutch, man of the south becomes the compound "zuid-man", but in German, it doesn't become a compound, it just becomes "mann aus dem suden" or something like that. So do you think it is likely that this is a German last name?

Dutch speakers, with your knowledge of the dutch language and making compound words in dutch, do you think that Sudermann could be of dutch origin, or no? Do you think it pertains to a man living near the Zuiderzee?

Thank you!

Pytanie #37:

What's a good English pet name for my boyfriend.?

I have a German boyfriend. We mainly speak German, but we want to speak English more. I call him a lot of very cute sweet names in German. But there is an emotional divide in English, because I have no cute names to use for him, names that people call the ones they love, but I haven't found any good ones in English. For example: he has already rejected babe, baby, love, dear, sweetheart.

We have to have something nice to call the one I love in my native language! Please help.

New England History PhD Programs With No Foreign Language Requirement?

Yesterday I graduated with my MA in History from Texas State University, and after a bit of soul searching, I think it might be a good idea to shoot for my PhD now. Having said that, I haven't really "studied" a second language since high school, and remember very little - if any - German at this point. This is a problem, since one (or even two - which is honestly just absurd) foreign languages are required for entrance into most history PhD programs I have seen.

In two weeks I'll be moving to southern Maine, and while there are a lot of universities in New England, I haven't found many with PhD History programs, let alone with requirements I feel I meet in the arena of language.

So, does anyone know of any New England (or even northeastern U.S.) history PhD programs that are slightly "lax" in their foreign language requirements? Honestly, I'm not looking to blow people out of the water with my school's name - I just want to attend, do my research, and get hooded; so no school is too small or obscure.

Any help is much appreciated.

Where and how the "Flemish" language developed in Europe as well as the name "Flanders"?

and how you would describe the differences in the sound from German, which is so close to this area? why this area developed its sound differently than modern German?

is one more an "older version" of "German" than the other perhaps or how similar the languages are? and why Dutch sounds so "Strange" compared to German?

what is "Flemish" a combination of really? and how it came about and grew? and why again?

thanks for your answers!

I want to organize my life and help my daughter as much as i can, I'm even started to see a psychologist as I've been thinking about suicide...
I want to make things right for my daughter but the feeling of not living with her kills me inside, i don't know what to do, i can't think of forgetting her mother because i love her so much, i know i messed it up and i was a jerk but, really i'm a nice guy i've always been just this time i didn't know how to cope with things, i have like a bomb clock in my head i cant think properly.
Is there anyone out there in this world than can advise me of what i should do...
i love her and want her back, i want to go to Germany as well but it will take time to learn the language, and since i have a quite good job i cant really leave, help please anyone.

Pytanie #45:

Did I write this correctly?

I'm writing a story, and I'd like to know if this is bad grammar.

Ben knew just about everything there was to know. He could recite the entire periodic table, speak five languages: French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Russian, give you the definition of nearly every word, memorize any series of words, and much more.

I know it's quite a run-on sentence, but I really just want to know if I used the colon right.

BQ: What's a good name for a smart girl?
Why? Because Ben needs a friend. xD

Pytanie #47:

English Independence?

Ok first of all im not one of these people who says " oh wales is better than england " or "england is better than scotland" because thats childish and no country is better than another because every nation's people should be proud to be and thats certainly the case in shropshire where english patriotism is mad like no other place(i think anyway). For a start there is massive 30 foot high graffiti saying english independence which im all for however not for the reasons it gave(it states the scottish are bastards)arnt good enough. In my town(which is a quaint little typical english country town where everyone seems to talk a regional dialect like in the vicar of dibley)there is a strong feeling that Scotlandand Wales is holding england back and we should be an independent state and seen as the scots and welsh want independence as well i've heard, THEN WHY NOT if the we believe your holdings us back(and were very upset about english taxes being given to aid scottish toffs university fees)and you believe the english are holding you back then thets forget great britain and thets have England Wales Scotland and Northen ireland as independant states.

And some advantages i thought up:

replacement of team gb at the olympics with independent nations representing themselves.

Andy murray would represent scotland which is good news for you scots.

The english can get rid of foreign oppression in the shape of gordon brown.

everyone can speak there own language again the way it should have been a long long time ago.

No more stupid cross border insults such as welsh sheep english all being like boris johnson and the scots all looking like gordon brown to name a few.

Independent governments so you can rule yourselves and get a vote.

The english can finally get a national anthem that means something to us like:i vow to thee my country or land of hope and glory instead of BRITAINS god save the (german) queen which we sing with as much pride as hitlers mum had of him.

So what do you think?

id like comments from all nations please!

Pytanie #48:

I think I'm going to have a child?

I am 18 and very depressed and unhappy and I want something that I can hang on to. I feel like I have nothing in life. I need a hobby, I need something that I can devote myself to. I'm not a good singer. I'm not a good actor. And I would like to be a famous ballet dancer, but can't dance to save my life. I'm not good at art anymore. I'm not good at writing poetry. I have no talents.

I've been thinking that perhaps I should have a child. Not right now, but in a year or two. Perhaps I could try to conceive it now so that I'll have it by the time I'm 19 and probably more mature.

I am gay, perhaps slightly bisexual, but I would like to have it the traditional way. I'm not gonna start having my sperm put in random women's eggs and all that stuff. I don't care for that much. However, I don't want a relationship. I want to be the only parent that child will have. I will never have a relationship in my life again, so I'll be entirely devoted to my child, perhaps children if I have many, for my entire life.

I need to find a woman who will not want to be the child's mother. I need a woman that, when she gives birth to my child, never sees it again. I'd prefer an attractive woman, of course, to mix our good genes and have a divine-looking child. Preferably a Russian woman or Dutch that looks like Cate Blanchett so that my child can have nice cheekbones.

I'm going to give my child a beautiful name like Duncan or Harold if it's a boy and Edith or Victoria if it's a child and dress it in Victorian-inspired baby clothes. I'm also going to be very strict and force it to take piano, violin, and ballet lessons as well as foreign languages lessons. I would like my child to speak English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish fluently.
Yes, force it. When it's older and so skilled, it will thank me for all my hard work.

Pytanie #49:

Why do people think the word "marine" is a title when they never use it as so?

People argue that the word 'marine' is a title, and should always be capitalized when 'airman, soldier,' or 'sailor" is not. Why? Because the USMC says so? Does that make it punctually correct? I don't think so.

The definition of TITLE:

A title is a prefix or suffix added to someone's name to signify either veneration, an official position or a professional or academic qualification. In some languages, titles may even be inserted between a first and last name (for example, Graf in German, Cardinal in Catholic usage or clerical titles such as Archbishop or Ter in the Armenian Apostolic Church). Some titles are hereditary.

So, if you use the word without adding someone's name and capitalize it, then you are punctually incorrect.

If you disagree, please show me an example of how the word 'marine' is capitalized when its use isn't in reference to a specific person, place or thing or part of a name like "The United States Marine Corps is a department under the United States Navy," or "The fighter flew back to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar."

In order for a word to be used as a title, it must have a person's name following it. For example:

Coach Belichick
Secretary Clinton
Chief of Staff Emmanuel
Judge Judy Scheindlin
Chief Executive Officer Goldstein
Assistant District Attorney Ashcroft

But since nobody uses the word 'marine' in such a manner, can it still be called a title?

"Marine Jackson, you are transferred to NAS Pensacola."

"Marine Ashley Walcrop, you are hereby charged with dereliction of duty."
EDIT:

And please don't say because the USMC or the military says to do it, so that makes it correct.

At one point in time, the military also considered black inferior to whites and wouldn't let them fly planes or lead groups of men into combat.

The DoD isn't above reproach.
@ Misplaced Midwesterne

I'm asking about how correct it would be in the English language.

The word 'marine' isn't any more deserving than a cop or firefighter...so why do some people insist on capitalizing it when it's not part of a name or isn't used as a proper noun?
The DoD can do whatever they like, but that doesn't mean it's correct the way the English language works.

The Army forces everyone to wear a black beret to increase the image of professionalism when seen by the general population. That doesn't mean it's the best idea in the world. For one, it doesn't shade your eyes very well from the sun or rain...not everyone shapes them correctly on their head so it looks poorly anyways.
@ JD

Some people seem to think that it should ALWAYS be capitalized no matter the usage.

How would you write this sentence:

"The marines from the 355th Marine Expeditionary Force came under heavy attack after they started their patrol."

Pytanie #50:

I call my country as i want? Is that right?

It is an imagine example to understand my question.
The year 2150. A country near Russia change its name to "Bavaria". They claim that they are the ancient citizens of Bavaria. In Germany there is also Bavaria. All the countries of the united nations recognize this country. It has the right to name themselves as they want. Germany has historical facts that Bavaria is a german area, and their citizen talk the german language. The other country doesn't have any proofs but only their school books and political talks, from 2050. Even doesn't have any historical facts from the ancient times, written in their language.

..... The year 2200. The country Bavaria near Russia, make war to Germany to gain back, as they think, their grounds.

I am sorry for this imagine story. It's only imagination. I make this story only to understand my question.
Please answear my question, not my story. The story is only to understand my question.
Another story to understant.
Europe..... in a small area in middle Europe, a country name themselves Chinese, and their country European Republic of China. They claim that they were in the grounds of Europe before Europeans, and their language "A kind of chinese language" is the ancient European language, but they don't have any historical ruins or facts to proove that, but the countries of the united nations U.N. recognize this country. Is that right? They can call themselves as they want. Because they want to gain something from that?
I forgot something.... i add that they want to name their country "Europe".
If we judge right, what we have to do?

The use and learning of the German language are promoted by a number of organisations. The government-backed Goethe Institut (named after the famous German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) aims to enhance the knowledge of German culture and language within Europe and the rest of the world.
