    • Although German is usually cited as an outstanding example of a highly inflected language, the degree of inflection is considerably less than in Old German or in other old Indo-European languages such as Latin, Ancient Greek, or Sanskrit, or, for instance, in modern Icelandic or Russian. The three genders have collapsed in the plural, which now behaves, grammatically, somewhat as a fourth gender.

Pytanie #3:

Help me speak the German language?

Somehow I was placed in a german four class in college, and although I wish to stay there, I am very nervous because I have not been practicing my German speaking in over a year! The first day of class will probably consist of getting to know other people, so I'm asking if you guys can help me on what the questions and answers would be like? Something like, how would the teacher say:
What did you do this summer vacation (du form or ihr)?
or she might say
Tell the class about yourself
or, well, you get the idea

How would I say that my summer was boring and I worked for half of it at a grocery store.
Also, how would I say that I am interested in German because the language is fascinating and I wish to visit there some day because of the architecture?

Any other hints or tips are much appreciated. Thank you so much!

Pytanie #4:

Are there any accredited architecture programs with an on-camupus language house?

I am a high school senior browsing "attend-able" colleges. So far, other than english, i can communicate fairly well in German. For my career, I want to be a licensed, practicing architect, but i also love learning languages and their corresponding cultures. From my understanding, the more languages I know, the higher my employability, and the higher the chance of getting travel opportunities. This is my dream.

Are there any NAAB accredited architecture programs (preferrably in the midwest, though not necessarily) that also have a language house (preferably, though not necessarily German) so that I can boost my proficiency in the language and enjoy on-campus housing?

Pytanie #5:

Exactly how is Nazism far right (or right at all)?

You can not claim they were a capitalist society, if you have seen their socialistic rants against big business and capitalism. However, they also hated communism, but prefered it to capitalism. It is clear that the Nazis did not support socialism from an egalitarian perspective. They instead supported an economic Third Way leaning towards socialism, as evidenced by some of Goebbels' diary "it would be better for us to go down with Bolshevism than live in eternal slavery under capitalism.". In Mein Kampf, Hitler basically supported a form of mercantilism. Many Nazis originally stressed the socialist factor of Nazism. However, they were purged from the Party and the SA for fear of alienating the conservative military.

The social positions of Nazism were not conservative in the traditional sense; instead, they were completely radical. This was the same with all forms of fascism. It was all about destroying "the System." The Nazis ranted and raved about destroying all things reactionary. Theymade new art, new architecture, new literature, new culture. They wanted to make new Germans. The State was to replace the Church, with Hitler as Christ for the Aryan race.

Right wing, huh?
FDR did the exact same things you claim the Nazis did. No one regards him as a right-winger.

To the point, Germany was not run by capitalists. This is a fantasy created and believed by those with other agendas in mind. They want to exploit the deaths in ww2 and the Holocaust to blame capitalism. Capitalsim did not create any of this. Statism did. Have you LEARNED that Nazi Germany was a totlitarian nation?

TO DISMISS THE LARGE LEFT-WING BLOCK OF NAZISM, SUCH AS THE SA AND STRASSERISM, IS TO COMPLETELY IGNORE HISTORICAL FACTS. NOT TO MENTION NATIONALIZATION OF VARIOUS INDUSTRIES. AND WHAT ABOUT NIETZCHE? Give me a break.

Pytanie #6:

ok seriously, what is the point of world expos?

i went there a couple of days ago and waited a total accumulated hours of about 10 i saw the japanese, german, and korean exhibit and it is byfar the biggest waste of time of my life. If you were to judge the world expo soley on the one day i spent in it is just a huge yawn fest and fresh hot and BIGGEST bull shit pie ever. You wait in a fucking 5 hour line to see some bullshit videos about some stupid bullshit pitch by some worldexpo monkey a about how their country is soo innovative and what their doing to be more green. Lets take for example the korean pavillion. All the buildings have wonderful architecture and its absolutely beautiful, but inside you know what it is? the building is the size of a medium size warehouse. Imagine a medium warehouse with some hall ways and rooms and each room is filled with a couple of tv monitors that play some bullshit video about how their country is being more green as stated above. Then after your done watching all the stupid fucking videos (that you waited 5 hours to see) you see a LONGER more high budgeted stupid video in a large room with chairs lol i guess the japanese one was a bit more entertaining but nonetheless it was still a huge fucking yawnfest seriously does anyone know what the point of the world expo is? i didnt see any advance technologies or anything worth taking a picture of except for the pavillions it seems like the world expo is just a way for countries to show off their archtecture like a giant pissing contest who can make the coolest building the rest is just filler

Pytanie #8:

Please HELP! Can you suggest any scholarship programmes(bachelors in architecture) to Germany?

I want to apply for a scholarship(bachelors in architecture) in Germany, but I can't seem to find any relevant degree programmes. I've tried googling and looking into a few sites, but no luck. I mean, I didn't really dig THAT deep. So, chances are there that I missed a few.
I'd be more than grateful if any of you could suggest any scholarship programmes based on aptitude. Or better, if you could give me site links.
Please, please, please, do help! Full points to the best answer!
Oh, one more thing. Will it be O.K.(rather, considered sane) if I just walk into the German Embassy in my city and try finding out info regarding scholarships? Or will I be considered retarded and just be turned away?

Pytanie #9:

What foreign languages would be considered most useful in architecture?

I am a soon-to-be high school senior and I would like to know, what language(s) would be considered most useful in architecture and it's associated fields? Associated fields include Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc,. I know that the importance of a foreign language depends on the firm, where it is located, and whether it even does international business.

If it's of any importance, I live in the Midwest, plan to attend college in the midwest USA, plan to work in the midwest with subdued, albeit intense *desire* to work elsewhere in the country or abroad. I'm currently studying German and have considerable (though not complete) proficiency in the language, and would like to study others.

Pytanie #10:

Major and Career Dilemma?

I'm a high school junior, and I want to study either Architecture or Civil Engineering in college. I know that it will be hard to find work in either field because of the economy, but I was thinking of working in Europe (probably Germany).

~I'm great with math/geometry and science, and I love both subjects.
~I'm fluent in English, Arabic, Spanish, and German.

Do you think it would work out well? I need any advice, preferably if you work in Europe. Thanks!!

.....(\/)
...(^.^)
....(__)*

PS: I know this is not the right section to ask this kind of question. But I posted it in the Careers section and didn't get any real answers. :(
@Oops: Yeah, I know it's still early lol. But I want to at least have an idea of how my life will be. Do you think I can get a job at your company? =D

Pytanie #11:

How do i subscribe to a German magazine from the USA?

There are few Architecture magazines that i want from Germany. Is there a way for me to subscribe to them? if so how? and how long would it take for me to get it?

Pytanie #12:

gefach??what's meaning?

I found this english or german word on my wood-architecture book.
I cant understand what's the meaning.
GEFACH!!!!
Can anyone tell me please??

Pytanie #13:

I NEED to double-major... but my University doesn't have Architecture and I'm ANGRY at that...?

So I'm majoring in Science Education.
But I really am into entertainment and architecture equally. Those are my three passions, (along with German but that's not a "major" option for me.)

Come to find out, my big-shot engineering/education/theatre-focused school ODU (Virginia) doesn't even HAVE architecture! Only one other local school has it (Hampton University) as a *5*-year bachelors program.

I don't have the time to do all that school! Any tips?? I'd rather double in Science Ed and Architecture than in Science Ed and Theatre, or something.
I've been interested in architecture since I was little, as I was with science and theatre (LOL, I'm multi-talented and multi-interested).

But I regained interest in architecture after losing it for a few years. Something re-clicked inside me. Now I regret not looking into it at first, before accepting ODU.

Pytanie #14:

Please can somebody translate this into German for me? No Babelfish or Google translations please?

I need to get this message across to a German friend and need your help!

bHi Jeff and Patti

I know that you are trying to decide on holiday destinations so I thought I would call you to make a recommendation.

I really think you should visit the Berlin Love Parade. It is absolutely wonderful! I went there 2 years ago and danced for 48 hours! Also, I found the architecture and history of the city very interesting. I stayed in a hotel in the old part of town which was very comfortable. I know you love parties and dancing but also culture so I think this would be the perfect destination for you.You could travel from Jersey to St Malo in France by ferry and then hire a car and drive to Berlin. That's how I did it. Alternatively, you could fly direct from Jersey to Berlin but this is a bit more expensive. Please give me a call back and tell me what you think about my idea! I may even come with you!

Talk to you soon

Ingrid

Pytanie #15:

Can anyone tell me famous English architecture?

I was most embarrassed when showing Italian, French and German friends the famous buildings of England as all they were either copied from Ancient Rome or Italy or were Georgian, Regency, Gothic or Palladian styles from Germany, France and Italy.
Thanks Philip B, Lutyens' buildings seem to have elements of Ancient Greek on them but Wren looks promising

Pytanie #16:

What B.A subjects would you take if you were me?

I know exactly what what kind of lifestyle I'd like, but I'm not too sure how to obtain it.

I want to busy all the time. I want to be decently paid and working in a city. I'm okay with long hours so long as I'm not self employed.

I want a degree that can help lead me into that lifestyle, but doesn't work me so hard that i don't have time to draw and write - my two real passions (although I do not want a job where I have to draw, and I do not want to study English or literature). I don't want to be a journalist, and I've already ruled out law and architecture. A BA majoring in Philosophy and minoring in Art History is most appealing, but probably won't help me into the lifestyle I want. I'm considering politics and japanese, but I'm not too sure what kind of jobs I could get with them, either.

All the personality tests i've completed say i should go into law or administration, but the amount of study lawyers have to do doesn't appeal to me, and I'm not too sure if I could handle the responsibility of being an administrator.

My skills include debating and arguing, critical thinking, writing (essay and creative), and I'm a fast learner if given proper instructions. I prefer being told what to do than making decisions myself. I'm decent at science and maths, but they're not my favorite subjects.

I know I want to go to university to do a Bachelor of Arts, but I just can't decide what subjects would be best for me.

This is what I have to choose from:

Ancient History | Anthropology | Art History | Asian Studies | Chinese | Classical Studies | Criminology | Dance* | Drama | Economics | Education | Employment Relations and Organisation Studies | English | English Language Acquisition and Linguistics | Ethics | Ethnomusicology* | European Studies | Film, Television and Media Studies | French | Geography | German | Greek (Ancient) | History | Italian | Japanese | Korean | Latin | Latin American Studies* | Linguistics | Linguistics and English Language Teaching | Logic and Computation | Māori Studies | Mathematics | Medieval and Early Modern European Studies* | Music | Music Education* | Pacific Studies | Philosophy | Political Studies | Psychology | Samoan* | Social Science for Public Health | Sociology | Spanish | Statistics | Tongan* | Women's Studies | Writing Studies

*Minor only

If you were in my position, what subject(s) would you take, and why?

Pytanie #17:

What are some must-do's in the 10 European cities (8 weeks) I'm traveling to?

My best friend and I (both males, age 22) are planning to travel to Europe for eight weeks over the summer next year after college graduation. We are both pretty much interested in anything that a city has to offer (nightlife, culture, museums, beautiful/historical architecture, parks, restaurants, beautiful landscapes, FOOD, anything that is 'fun' etc..). Language shouldn't be a problem for us since I speak fluent Spanish and Italian, and my friend speaks fluent French and German (and both English obviously). How should we divide our trip and what are some things we should consider doing? The cities we're hitting up are:
Seville
Madrid
Barcelona
Edinburgh
London
Paris
Amsterdam
Munich
Florence
Rome

Thank you in advance!

Pytanie #18:

Should the German Wikipedia allow edits only by experts in their subject area?

There's been considerable debate about allowing only experts in a particular subject area to edit articles on the English Wikipedia. In other words, someone who's an expert in computer science shouldn't be editing articles on architecture, even if that editor is using reliable sources and references. Or, someone who's an expert in architecture shouldn't be editing articles on Baroque music. And, presumably, someone who's 25 and still living in their parents' house shouldn't be editing anything at all.

Should the German Wikipedia have the same policy? Is the editor who made this change an expert in horticulture:

who can help me in english?

i have to make a presentation on english about los angeles but i don´t know if there are mistakes......

Los Angeles

The City of Los Angeles also known as L.A. is the second largest city in the United States in terms of population, but it also is one of the world's most important economic, cultural, and entertainment centers. The inhabitants are 3,833,995. The city is one of the biggest entry points for immigrants to the United States, making it one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. People are attracted to the city for its warm weather, its lifestyle, its unique energy, and the opportunity to realize the American Dream. (1)

Geography
It is located on the west coast of the United States. The city has a total area of 1,290.6 km². There is also the Los Angeles River flowing through the city. The Los Angeles area is rich in native plant species. There are many exotic flowers and flowering trees that are blooming year-round.

Climate
The city is placed in a Mediterranean climate zone with mild, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers. Seaward breezes keep the beach communities of Los Angeles and San Diego cooler in summer and warmer in winter, compared to those from further inland.

Demographics
The racial makeup of the city is of whites, African Americans, native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and other others like Hispanics and Latinos.

History
Los Angeles was incorporated as a city in California in 1850. The first railroads came, when the Southern Pacific completed its line to Los Angeles in 1876. Oil was discovered in 1892, and by 1923, Los Angeles was giving one-quarter of the petroleum in the world.

In the 1920s moved film and traveling industries to Los Angeles and helped to further develop it. The city was the proud host of the 1932 Summer Olympics. World War II brought new growth, success and richness to the city, although many of its Japanese-American inhabitants were transported to internment camps (2) for the period of the war. During this period also the arrival of the German exiles took place, which included such famous persons as Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht and Lion Feuchtwanger. During the years after the war there was an even greater boom, as urban extension expanded into the San Fernando Valley.

Arts and entertainment
Los Angeles is sometimes considered as being the entertainment capital of the world. It gets the title of the cultural capital of the United States together with New York City. Its largest and most well known entertainment industry is film production, but it is also an important center for music, art, and architecture. In Los Angeles there are 4 boroughs: Hollywood, Baverly Hills, Santa Monica and Anaheim.

Pytanie #20:

What are the best architecture schools in europe?

I'm focusing on the UK, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Scandinavia.
Preferably english speaking but german, french and italian I could brush up on (native spanish and english speaker with some knowledge of the aforementioned languages).
I want to do a masters on architectural design (perhaps urban design if the program is interesting enough) there next year.

Pytanie #21:

What's the most beautiful German city?

I'm from the United States, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but for me, I'm looking for lots of old architecture which I find much more beautiful than modern architecture.

Thanks you.

Pytanie #22:

Do Dutch people feel more Spain-like or more Germany-like?

Considering that Spain occupied the Netherlands centuries ago but did not occupy Germany. Didn't this make the Netherlands more fiesta-like with some kind of Tapas bars and Spanish rice and Spanish guitar?
New York City where the Puerto Rican spanish-speaking people live they call it Spanish Harlem. Wouldn't Spanish Harlem also be what Haarlem in the Netherlands was called when Spain colonised the Netherlands?
Where's the Spanish element in the Netherlands, it was part of Spain? Is there something Spanish-like about Dutch architecture?

So then instead the Dutch are German and listen to this Schlager and drink beer and are big on soccer....same as Germany....

so are the Dutch closer to the Spanish or the Germans?

Aren't there Dutch Catholics because of Spain? And these Dutch Catholics would not be German Lutherans? So why is the culture more German-like with the beer?

Pytanie #23:

When and where do you think Disney's Beauty and the Beast occurred?

Obviously it is set in France, but I am looking for the specific region. My mom have just finished watching the movie and can guess no better than along the French-German border (due to the architecture of the cottages in town and the temperate forest). As for the date I can guess no earlier than 1889 as during the song "Be Our Guest" the flatware dances into a mock sculpture of the Eiffel Tower which was constructed for the 1889 World's Fair held in France. Of course I know this is a fictional movie, it's just fun to guess the date and location of a fictional movie XD

Other movies we're trying to figure out the 4-D specifics of are Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I'm glad to hear any guesses, but please add facts to support them.

Pytanie #24:

when and how the German cities of "Munchen" (Munich) and "Frankfurt" came established and why?

what was happening at the time of each of their creations and how the architecture, people are similar and different?

Pytanie #25:

making a summary? please help? easy 10 points?

please make a summary for each paragraph. i would really appreciate it! thanks!!!

Thomas Hardy was born June 2, 1840, in the village of Upper Bockhampton, located in Southwestern England. His father was a stone mason and a violinist. His mother enjoyed reading and relating all the folk songs and legends of the region. Between his parents, Hardy gained all the interests that would appear in his novels and his own life: his love for architecture and music, his interest in the lifestyles of the country folk, and his passion for all sorts of literature.

At the age of eight, Hardy began to attend Julia Martin's school in Bockhampton. However, most of his education came from the books he found in Dorchester, the nearby town. He learned French, German, and Latin by teaching himself through these books. At sixteen, Hardy's father apprenticed his son to a local architect, John Hicks. Under Hicks' tutelage, Hardy learned much about architectural drawing and restoring old houses and churches. Hardy loved the apprenticeship because it allowed him to learn the histories of the houses and the families that lived there. Despite his work, Hardy did not forget his academics: in the evenings, Hardy would study with the Greek scholar Horace Moule.

Are "switzerlandians" friendly people? future for architects or landscape architect there?

Hi there...
I am spanish...i am studing on the UK....
I am planning to go and live on Switzerland on a future, however i have a few doubts...
i dislike a lot people being rude to you for not being from the same country...or people looking at u like if u were dumb when u try to talk their language...and on the other side i love helpful and polite people...i like to be able to smile to people and get smiles back...it just makes me feel very cool xD
So i was wondering how is like, living in Switzerland for a foreigner?
Also im studding Something related with architecture and landscape architecture, do u think that i may have a good future on Switzerland with that kind of career?
I would talk German some of course...i would start studding it soon...Once im sure of everything..

Also i would not like to live on the center of the city but on some nice suburb around it...Are there many suburbs on Switzerland? Are them popular? or everyone tends to live around the city center? are those suburbs as safe as the city?

And one of the most important questions, how is the life style there? how many hours people tends to work? (always talking about architecture...landscape arch..engineers and all those things)
Is it a laid back country? or is it an accelerated country as the UK? (i dislike this a lot, everyone going fast for everything)
Do people stay on the city at night, around 10 o'clock or it gets totally empty?

and last question...what would u consider a GOOD salary in there? im quite an spender...

running out of time to pick out a college major/career choice... completely clueless/very undecisive?

i have never been able to decide what to do with my life

since my parents encouraged me to go to college(threatened to kick out) i decided to just get my AA in general studies- you know english 101 and all that other required stuff

but now i am almost halfway done with my 2nd simester in community college and will have completed everything required to start going for my major or transfer to a 4 year university. i recently joined phi theta kappa and am also trying to fill out several scholarship applications which require you to give your major(and will not allow undecided)- the only problem being that i am completely indecisive about what i actually want to do for a living. frankly i dont have the slightest clue
i have considered a couple of things but never actually went for them here are a couple of thing ive considered in the past:
engineering - (way too much work, and i couldnt really figure out what subfield i could possibly go into[mechanical or electrical probably] so i decided not to)

architecture - (same as engineering, couldnt figure out a subfield and it looked like a lot of work with little reward)

computers - (i only know the bare basics[if you could even call it that]so it would be far too tedious and take way to long to become respectable let alone catch up to my peers)

ive been secretly learning a little japanese in my spare time off the internet and am planning to learn italian, french, spanish, german, and as many other languages as possible after i become fluent in the previous one, so i could potentially be a translator

my dad suggested being an RN like my mom but seeing her come home crying after work and hearing her horror stories i have no interest, nor the stomach for the job

my dad also suggested being a teacher (college not kids, i reaaaaaally dont like kids) but i dont even know what i could possibly teach

---
here is a little about me to help know what im into:

i really like science and technology and all that stuff, i am a very good writer(not that you could tell from this), i am fairly good at guitar, im pretty smart and a quick learner- but im very lazy and never really tried to exceed(im the guy who slept in class yet got the highest grades), and i also enjoy long walks on the beach(cue obnoxious laugh)

----

so do any of you fine people who were brave enough to have read that wall of text have any suggestions as to what i should do, or any career/college advice, anything? :(
@eclipse well i didnt 'really' sleep in class, it was more like staring off into space daydreaming- but i might as well have been :)

Living in France or Germany?

Lets say I was to move to France or Germany, which is better?
I would want to live in a big city. I would want to live in a city that is high tech... and is very modern. I would want to live in a city that has interesting modern architecture. I would want to live in a city that is safe. I would want to live in a city that has... a nice amount of fun things to do. I would be fine with having to learn French or German. Which city or cities in either country would be the best to live in?
So ya basically I am asking which city is best to live in... for either country.

Pytanie #33:

Should I drop out of medschool for architecture?

I am a 20 year old medical student, and since arriving at medical school i can honestly say i have never been more depressed and anxious. I was anxious and depressed before hand but it just went out of control at medschool. The enormous amounts of working hours, the stress of the work, the anxiety of failing all got to me, i knew it was going to be hard work but not to a point where i dont have time to do anything. I have a feeling i just did this course because of my parents saying it was good and putting me off other courses.

At school i was not really interested at science, i was just not bad at it. My actual interests were art, geography, history and german. however i did chemistry biology physics and art to get into medschool. I have felt that i was more interested in architecture then medicine but my parents had doubts about architecture.

I am in a bad position at the moment and don't want to make any rash decisions. I have wasted alot of my parents money if i drop out now, which could make me more anxious and depressed, but i don't know if i can do the summer exams again, they were 8 weeks of hell, non-stop revision. I know i a definately not in the worst position in the world but i have just tried to make sure i have got my point across right so i can get the best advice possible.

Lastly since arriving at medschool all my life revolves around is trying to get good grades and impressing people, and thats it really. Any advice about what i should do?

Career advice for a college-bound junior: architect or doctor?

So...I am a junior and I really am lost for where I should be headed with what will be my career.

For the past 3 years, I have been thinking about becoming a doctor. I have good grades in science and I am taking AP Chemistry this year-which isn't my best grade but I'm doing okay. Considering the caliber of my school, too, I know I could get into a Pre-med program. (I am not saying that to sound cocky, but it is true). But doctors have a lot of school expenses, a high-stress life, and not a lot of time to enjoy life. I could do it...and I really like the idea of being that knowledgeable, professional, and helping people. But I'm not the strongest person emotionally and doctor's deal with a lot of death...My philosophy on doing medicine is: [a] it is a reliable career [b] I would help people [c] it is hard, and overcoming a lot of difficult study would make me really proud of myself

On the other hand, I have been drawing buildings in my sketch book since I was quite young. I love buildings a lot. But architecture is not as...profitable as medicine. That sounds terrible, but I haven't grown up a with a lot (I only go to a great high school because I'm on scholarship) and I know that money makes a lot of things in life less of a hassle. My dad is an engineer, and knows many architects. They do okay...most are men. Their caliber of education is also high. They are well respected, but they don't really help people. But they draw, seek inspiration, and build models. It sounds like something I could truly enjoy...besides not helping others.

No matter what, I will most likely double major (the second being business management).

So...here are my top college choices (if I get in):
1. ANNAPOLIS-which doesn't have biology. God knows why, but they do have good math and engineering. But many doctors come from Annapolis...probably a good architecture school, too.
2. Fordham
3. Georgetown
4. Barnard
5. Canisius
*anywhere I go I need to either get full scholarship or do (N)ROTC. And if neither of those are possible-I need a job which could help me get rid of student loans quickly.

I can speak Spanish and French at fairly high levels (I will probably be fairly fluent by the end of next year in both) and I hope to learn German and Japanese in college. Knowing that, I want to work and live in another country for some time (Belgium, Denmark, Japan, or Germany).

Which career is better for the following:
[a] becoming quite wealthy while paired with a business degree
[b] being happy and having a healthy lifestyle
[c] traveling/living internationally

FRANCE OR GERMANY BETTER TO LIVE?

I have been to Germany and France. The French were nicer than Americans overall. However the Germans were far nicer than the French overall.

Things I love about Germany the most are the people, the architecture, with mixture of modern and historic features and the scenery is just beautiful, it's the best. I also had more fun when I was in Germany. The only setback is Germany is ranked #25 in Health care and France #1 ranked in health care. United States is ranked #37 in the world with health care.

Also Germany has many cities in the top 10 list of the best places to live in the world. It has lower crime, longer life expectancy and a better overall quality of life than France. Like I said the only thing that France has cheaper health care and is ranked #1 in the world with healthcare. France is so close to Germany I am sure I could go to France for health care if I decided to.

I heard a horror story one time about the German health care system but I am sure they have accidents all the time in America with health care too especially with U.S being ranked #37 and Germany #25 in the world.

The things I liked about France was it's better suited for Americans but when I was there the French were not as friendly as the Germans since I spoke English they were not as helpful, but I must say I met some wonderful French people that were very helpful.

I also loved the fact that French care about their health more. When I was there majority people were out exercising and I am sure that would motivate me to get in shape again too. Other things I liked about France is that it's more touristy which is great but they also have cities that are more reserved and more quiet than Paris. France architecture was nice but Germany scenery is more beautiful and had a more relaxing feel to it.

Also share your experiences and which one you think is better to live between Germany or France. Help me to decide. Thanks

Pytanie #42:

GERMANY OR FRANCE TO LIVE?

I have lived in Germany years ago. Also I have visited Paris and I have also been to the French countryside too. I must say that Germany has better scenery than France. When I was in Paris I did meet some very nice people and I found that the French are nicer than Americans overall but I must say the Germans were much nicer than the French people overall. It is easier to get a visa in Germany compared to having to apply to get a visa for France I would have to apply before leaving. Germany is more convenient because I can wait to get approved while over in Germany versus me having to wait to get approved for a French visa in the United States. Also it takes 8 years to become a German citizen and for France it takes 5 years which is a thumbs up for France but either way I have to learn either language fluently which is no problem. I know years ago Germany would have not been the place to stay because of all that mess with the Holocaust but that was so many years ago but I think Germany isn't the same it's more open to everything and it's more laid back compared to America. The nightlife in Germany was so much better and the people are more fun too overall. I met some wonderful people in France but I found more friendlier people in Germany compared to France. Most importantly Germany is a safer country with lower crime compared to France which is a plus for Germany and 50 years ago during the war in Germany that would have not been the place for anyone to live but Germany is a nothing like it used to be and is more open to more things while unfortunately in America 80 percent of the people are still stuck on race, gays and most people are so judgmental of everything and the crime in America is far worse than France or Germany. France is ranked # 1 in the world with the best healthcare, Germany is ranked # 25 and America is ranked # 37 in the world. France would be my pick when it comes to healthcare but I have to admit the people are more snobby (not everyone) but most compared to the Germans although I know their are A**holes in every country but there will always be good and bad wherever you go but countries like Germany and France are far better than the U.S because people are less judgmental and it's a different vibe. In America it's like you can feel the b.s in the air so to speak. Most people of all nationalities in America have a jealous mentality and a lot of ignorance among most races in America compared to France or Germany. Well anyways, I think the most attractive country when it comes to scenery is Germany hands down and it's so beautiful there and I loved the whole feel of Germany. It's so much cleaner than France and Germany just is a more beautiful country without a doubt. The architecture in Germany is beautiful too and Germany is the most attractive country in my book. The only draw back is that Germany is ranked # 25 in healthcare and France is #1 in health care but they are both better versus America being ranked #37 in the world. Another reason I was kind of leaning towards France not only because of them having the best healthcare but because I lived in Germany already but it's only a 1 hour flight away and I could drive to either country if need be. I have already lived in Germany and when I did visit France I found the Germans to be more friendly overall compared to France as I mentioned but those 2 countries are way better than here in the U.S by far because the people are more open minded than here. Even though I lived in Germany I could move back again I just kind of figured since I lived there already why not try something new like France but when I visited France I didn't feel as welcomed as when I was in Germany but no one will be liked by everyone regardless of where anyone goes but Germany had a more relaxing, welcoming feel compared to France. Most people think France is more appealing than Germany I guess because most people think there are Nazi's running around all over the place in Germany. I am sure they still may have a few but since I have lived in Germany a few years ago I must say I know it's not the same Germany like it was 50 years ago and that is how I feel it has a more welcoming feeling compared to America that's for certain. France and Germany are 2 wonderful places. I admire the French people for being so physically fit and I'm sure that contributed helping them being ranked #1 in the world with healthcare for France. Another reason I was leaning towards France is because it takes only 5 years to become a citizen versus 8 years to become a citizen in Germany but to get a visa I can apply after arriving in Germany and for France I would have to wait here in the U.S to get an approval just to get a visa for France which is inconvenient because I can't apply after arriving in France but for Germany I have options to apply before leaving America or I could apply after arriving which is a plus for Germany too. Can you all please give me your advice because I am kind

First time leaving the U.S... where to go?

I'm 24 and 2 of my friends and I plan on traveling out of the country for the first time this summer. We want to keep 2 things in mind...

1. The only languages other than English that we know are German (pretty fluent) and French (just a little), so we want to be able to get around pretty easy using just those
2. We don't have a lot of money. We want to fly in to the cheapest place we can, and see as much as we can in a little bit of time.

With that said, we have very little requirements. Myself, I'd love to see a few museums but I'm mainly concerned with picturesque scenery. My friend is really concerned with architecture.

ALL suggestions, please! Any continent/country!!!

Digital cloud plan for city skies
By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

The inflatable elements of the building would sit on top of thin, lightweight towers

A giant "digital cloud" that would "float" above London's skyline has been outlined by an international team of architects, artists and engineers.

The construction would include 120m- (400ft-) tall mesh towers and a series of interconnected plastic bubbles that can be used to display images and data.

The Cloud, as it is known, would also be used an observation deck and park.

The unconventional structure was originally envisaged as a centre piece of the city's Olympic village.

The building draws inspiration from the work of Tomas Saraceno
Its designers plan to raise the funds to build it by asking for micro-donations from millions of people.

"It's really about people coming together to raise the Cloud," Carlo Ratti, one of the architects behind the design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) told BBC News.

"We can build our Cloud with £5m or £50m. The flexibility of the structural system will allow us to tune the size of the Cloud to the level of funding that is reached."

The size of the structure will evolve depending on the number of contributions, he said.

Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York who has seen the design described it as a "sculptural spectacle" and "a celebration of technology".

'Data streams'

The Cloud was shortlisted in a competition set-up by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The mayor has committed to build a tourist attraction in the Olympic Park "with a legacy for the east end [of London]".

Other finalists are thought to include the former Turner prize winner Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley, the designer of the Angel of the North.

The mayor is still in the "process of deciding" which design will be commissioned, according to a spokesperson.

However, the team, which also includes the writer Umberto Eco and engineers from Arup, has decided to push ahead and publish details of its design.

The structure draws on work by artist Tomas Saraceno, a German-based designer who has previously shown off huge inflatable sculptures.

It is envisaged that the spheres would be made of a plastic known as Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), the material used to build the Beijing Aquatic Centre.

The different spheres would act as structural elements, habitable spaces, decoration and LCD screens on which data could be projected.

"We could provide a custom feed of… searches made by Londoners during the Olympics to give a real time 'barometer' of the city's interests and mood," said Google, one of the supporters of the project, which has also offered to provide the information feeds.

The team also envisage projecting weather information, spectator numbers, race results or even images of the Olympic Torch on to the building.

Ramps, stairs and lifts would carry people to the top of the structure to look out over the city.

'Zero power'

The inflatable elements of the building would sit on top of slender, lightweight towers, stabilised by a net of metal cables.

Damping technology, similar to that used in Japanese skyscrapers to resist earthquakes, would prevent the towers being buffeted by the wind.

The Killesberg Tower in Germany is built using similar principles
"Many tall towers have preceded this, but our achievement is the high degree of transparency, the minimal use of material and the vast volume created by the spheres," said professor Joerg Schleich, the structural engineer behind the towers.

Professor Schleich was responsible for the Olympic Stadium in Munich as well as numerous lightweight towers built to the same design as the Cloud.

The structure would also be used to harvest all the energy it produces according to Professor Ratti.

"It would be a zero power cloud," he said.

As well as solar cells on the ground and inside some of the spheres, the lifts would use regenerative braking, similar to that in some hybrid cars.

That way, the designers say, potential energy from visitors to the top of the tower can be harnessed into useful electricity.

The team have launched a fundraising website called raisethecloud.org and are now looking for a site for the tower.

Google has already offered to provide free advertising for the so-called "cloud-raising" effort.

The firm has offered a sponsored link at the top of the page advertising a "£1 for 1 pixel" concept to people who search for terms relevant to London 2012.

"It will be a monument to crowd-sourcing," said Professor Ratti.

Do I Have a Chance at Getting into Brown University?

I am going to be a senior and high school and although I originally did not think I would ever want to attend an Ivy League school, after visiting Brown I know that is where I want to be. I have a 97.17 GPA which converts over to a 4 on the other scale if I am correct. I got an 1850 on SATs (which is bad.. I realize that.) I play three varsity sports (Cross Country, Swimming & Diving, and Track). I also am an Eagle Scout along with being an active member in my troop after my award. I was Fundraising Head of our Astronomy club and should be president this year. I created a club known as the Reach club which is designed to tutor students at our school (I am also president of that). I am in Jazz, Concert, and Marching band also. (I know I have a lot of extracurriculars!) As for my course selection I've taken all honors classes and should be in 3-4 AP classes for the upcoming year (you can only take APs your senior year at my high school excluding bio.) Although I have taken Architecture, Computer Animation, and 3 years of German which technically aren't honors. I haven't taken SATIIs yet but I hope to do better on them than regular SAT. I also am going to take a SAT class now to hopefully get all my scores above at least a 650. I really love Brown and I'd appreciate honest opinions on my question on getting into this highly selective school.
